So what?
If you want to know how annoying forum formats can get, log into the new SL forum. It almost seems as if things should work easily, but nothing really does.

( There's now an "off-topic" section, fwiw... )

To be fair, they've been on top of things since the new forums were released. Communicating A LOT, making changes in response to the community. Nothing major, except for the new Off Topic forum, but stuff like increasing the vertical size of sigs and providing new RSS feeds.
I like the overall feel and setup. They need to un-fuck a few things, but they seem to be trying to do that already.
(I hate sounding like a fanboy. Fuck. :P)

Frankly they should have left the GD/Off Topic ara out of the god damned official forum. Let the users go elsewhere to ramble on about shit that isn't related to Second Life or has only the loosest relation to the software.
I certainly hope the newer format will result in some of the worst whiners, "sky is falling", and other similar sorts being evicted/

Nah, you basically NEED an Off-Topic type forum in any similar instance. Or else it just all comes out in other forums where it's unwelcome and disrupting.

Yeah, I'm sort of torn on that, myself. Just saying "that's offtopic, stop it" seems more heavy-handed than "that's offtopic here, please take it to X". But if "X" is "the offtopic forum", then you have the offtopic forum to try to keep under control. On the other hand if "X" is "some third-party forum", then lots of people just won't do that, because it's one more thing to find and register for and figure out.
All told I think having an offtopic forum is probably a good idea. But I'm glad it's not me who has to decide... :)
(Are we ragging on, um I mean, discussing the Ranking system anywhere yet?)

Actually, we have several "Off Topic" style forums here, kind of... it's hard to compare SC to the official forums.
When I said "in any similar instance", I should have been clearer. What I meant by that was, other official forums for online games/virtual worlds. Third-party is a different story, unless the forums are about one specific topic... like "Coffee Mug Enthusiast Central" (I made that up). They could easily have a forum for "off topic" discussions.
For us, not so much. We're just a general board with a range of topics. We may be an SL-related Third Party Forum, but I wouldn't consider it central to what the :sc: site is all about, since there are many who don't visit SL anymore.
