I've seen these threads in the past but I can't seem to find them now with search.

I'm wanting to replace my 5+ year old set-up which has gone from pretty good to barely adequate and is currently refusing to launch windows.

I have a good repair guy who's going to take a look at it for me tomorrow. He has also found me a good deal on a replacement. He's going to send me the specs, but he already mentioned that the motherboard has a built in graphics processor, and that doesn't sound right. He will put together what ever I want if I can just tell him what that is.

I am so clueless. I really want someone to itemize the components I need for great or at least good performance. I run SL and I'd like to see the reflections and shadows etc etc. I'd also like to be able to run the Gimp and my ancient version of Paint Shop Pro both while SL is running. I also use an old version off Dreamweaver and Homesite plus a little minor video editing.

Thanks for any help I can get here.

Considering that my PC started acting up again last night (freezing at the background on boot up, no desktop visible) I plan on watching the recommendations in this thread with great interest. Carry on please :)

Desktop (as opposed to laptop)?

Thanks for responding. I meant to say I'm looking for a desktop. I'd like to keep the price under $1000 if possible, if I can get something that runs SL with all the bells and whistles while working in Gimp and answering email at the same time. I think the monitor I have is ok for now. Eventually I'd like a really good graphics tablet but that can wait.
